South LA Suspect to Officer After Being Shot: ‘Good Shot’

LOS ANGELES – In a startling moment captured on a police body camera, a domestic violence suspect who had just been shot by a Los Angeles Police Department officer reportedly praised the officer’s aim, remarking, “good shot.” The dramatic encounter unfolded in a South Los Angeles home earlier this month, with the LAPD releasing footage of the incident this week.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Shamar Bennett, was wounded in the leg after officers responded to a distressing 911 call on the morning of May 3, 2025. The call, made from a residence in the 900 block of East 118th Drive, described a violent domestic dispute where a man was allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with a firearm.

Upon arrival, officers reported hearing screams from within the house. Body camera footage shows them entering the home where they encountered a chaotic and tense scene. As they moved through the residence, they came upon Bennett, who was holding what appeared to be an AR-style rifle.

Fearing for the safety of the woman and others in the home, at least one officer discharged their weapon, striking Bennett in the lower leg. In the immediate aftermath of the single shot, as officers moved in to provide medical aid and secure the scene, Bennett is clearly audible on the video footage telling one of the officers, “good shot.”

The weapon brandished by Bennett was later recovered and determined to be a CO2-powered BB gun designed to replicate the appearance of a real assault rifle.

Emergency medical aid was rendered to Bennett at the scene before he was transported to a local hospital for treatment of the non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was subsequently taken into custody.

The woman who was the subject of the initial 911 call was located at the scene and treated for injuries she allegedly sustained during the domestic violence incident prior to the officers’ arrival. Several other individuals were also present in the home and were unharmed.

The LAPD is conducting a full investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as is standard procedure in all such incidents. The case will also be reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office. Details on the specific charges Bennett faces have not yet been released.

The release of the body camera footage and the suspect’s unusual comment have sparked a wave of discussion online and in the community, highlighting the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of domestic violence calls for law enforcement officers.
