Moment DPS chase on Loop 410 ends in crash; 5 people hospitalized

SAN ANTONIO, TX — A high-speed chase involving a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper on Loop 410 culminated in a dramatic crash that sent five people to the hospital Friday morning, authorities said.

The incident, which unfolded around 9:30 a.m. on the Southwest Loop 410 access road between State Highway 151 and Marbach Road, brought traffic to a standstill and left a trail of wreckage.

The pursuit began when a DPS trooper attempted to pull over a white Dodge Challenger for an unspecified traffic violation. The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Matthew Daniel Garcia, allegedly refused to stop and fled, initiating the chase.

A video captured by a witness and circulated on social media shows the white Challenger weaving through traffic at high speed with a DPS patrol unit in close pursuit. In the footage, the Challenger is seen losing control, striking a barrier, and then slamming into a pickup truck before overturning.

The force of the impact caused significant damage to both the Challenger and the pickup truck. Garcia was extricated from the overturned vehicle and transported to a local hospital. His condition has not been publicly released.

A man, a woman, and a child who were occupants of the pickup truck were also injured in the collision and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries is not currently known.

The DPS trooper involved in the chase was also transported to the hospital as a precautionary measure and has since been released, according to a department spokesperson.

Authorities have charged Garcia with evading arrest with a motor vehicle. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and further charges may be pending.

The access road where the crash occurred was closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene and crews worked to clear the debris. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of police pursuits in heavily trafficked areas.
