Man arrested after Utah ‘No Kings’ rally shooting is released as investigation continues

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A man arrested on suspicion of murder following a fatal shooting at a “No Kings” political rally in downtown Salt Lake City last week has been released from custody as the investigation into the chaotic incident continues. The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday that no formal charges have been filed against Arturo Gamboa, 24, leading to his release.

The tragic events unfolded on the evening of Saturday, June 14, 2025, amidst a large demonstration. According to Salt Lake City Police, Gamboa was seen brandishing an assault-style rifle near the rally. His actions drew the attention of an armed volunteer peacekeeper who was providing security for the event.

In a fraught confrontation, the volunteer fired his handgun, striking both Gamboa and a bystander, 39-year-old Arthur Folasa Ah Loo. Tragically, Ah Loo, a well-regarded local fashion designer and participant in the rally, succumbed to his injuries. Gamboa, who did not discharge his own weapon, sustained non-life-threatening wounds.

Initially, police arrested Gamboa on the grounds that his actions created the volatile situation that led to Ah Loo’s death. However, after a week of investigation, District Attorney Sim Gill stated that his office was not prepared to file charges at this time, paving the way for Gamboa’s release.

The investigation now appears to be focused on the actions of the volunteer peacekeeper who fired the fatal shots. Authorities have not yet publicly identified the individual but have confirmed the investigation will scrutinize the justification for the use of deadly force. The role and legality of armed volunteers at public demonstrations are also expected to come under review.

The shooting has sent shockwaves through the Salt Lake City community, transforming a political rally into the scene of a homicide investigation. Friends and family of Arthur Folasa Ah Loo are mourning the loss of a beloved figure, remembered for his kindness and community spirit.

As Gamboa is released, many questions remain unanswered. The Salt Lake City Police Department has appealed to the public for any additional video footage or witness accounts that could shed light on the precise sequence of events. The District Attorney’s Office has emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that charges could still be filed as more evidence comes to light.
