Saginaw teen in critical condition after hit-and-run crash

Saginaw Community Rocked After Teen Left in Critical Condition Following Hit-and-Run Collision

SAGINAW, MI – A wave of shock and anger has swept through the Saginaw community after a local teenager was left in critical condition following a devastating hit-and-run crash late Friday evening. The 17-year-old victim is currently fighting for his life as police launch an urgent appeal for information to bring the perpetrator to justice.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 PM at the intersection of Holland Avenue and S. Washington Avenue. According to a statement from the Saginaw Police Department, the teen was crossing the street at a marked crosswalk when a vehicle, described by witnesses as a dark-colored sedan, ran a red light and struck him at high speed. The driver of the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene, continuing west on Holland Avenue.

Emergency services were on the scene within minutes. Paramedics from Mobile Medical Response (MMR) found the teenager with life-threatening injuries and immediately transported him to a local hospital, where he remains in the intensive care unit. The family of the victim has requested privacy at this difficult time.

Saginaw Police have opened a full investigation into the hit-and-run. “This is a senseless act of cowardice that has left a young man in a fight for his life,” said Detective Sergeant Michael Meyer of the Saginaw Police Department’s Traffic Division in a press conference held Saturday morning. “To the driver of that vehicle, I urge you to do the right thing and turn yourself in. We will use every resource at our disposal to find you.”

Investigators are currently canvassing the area for any available surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residences that may have captured the incident or the fleeing vehicle. They are urging anyone who was in the vicinity of Holland and S. Washington around the time of the crash to come forward with any information they may have, no matter how insignificant it may seem.

“Even a partial license plate number, a description of any damage to the vehicle, or the direction it was headed after the collision could be the key to breaking this case,” Detective Meyer added.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern among Saginaw residents, with many taking to social in a plea for the driver to come forward and for witnesses to share any information they may have. A makeshift memorial of flowers and balloons has begun to grow at the corner where the collision occurred, a somber testament to the community’s grief and support for the young victim and his family.

Local community leaders have also expressed their sorrow and condemnation of the driver’s actions. City Councilwoman Elizabeth Thompson stated, “Our hearts are with the young victim and his family. This tragic event is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving and the moral depravity of fleeing the scene of an accident. We must come together as a community to support the police in their investigation and ensure that our streets are safe for everyone.”

The Saginaw Police Department is asking anyone with information about this hit-and-run to contact the Saginaw Police Department’s Traffic Division at (989) 759-1289 or, to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL (5245).
