NEW YORK, NY – June 16, 2025 – American Express (NYSE: AXP) today announced a significant overhaul of its U.S. Consumer and Business Platinum Cards®, signaling what the company calls its “largest investment ever in a Card refresh.” While specific details are expected to be unveiled in the fall, the announcement hints at a comprehensive upgrade to travel, dining, and lifestyle benefits, along with potential aesthetic changes to the cards themselves.

This strategic move by American Express appears to be a direct response to evolving customer needs, with a particular focus on attracting and retaining Millennial and Gen Z cardholders, who reportedly accounted for 35% of total U.S. consumer spending on Platinum Cards last quarter.

“Platinum Card benefits and services resonate across generations,” stated Howard Grosfield, Group President, U.S. Consumer Services. “We’re going to take these Cards to a new level, not only in what they offer in travel, dining and lifestyle benefits, but also in how they look and feel, to meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

While full details remain under wraps, American Express has provided some tantalizing glimpses into the upcoming enhancements:

  • Expanded Centurion Lounge Network: A significant focus of the refresh is on enhancing the airport lounge experience. American Express announced the opening of three new Centurion Lounges within the next year, located in Newark, New Jersey; Salt Lake City, Utah; and Tokyo, Japan. This expansion will bring the total number of Centurion Lounges to 32, further solidifying American Express’s position as a leader in premium airport lounge access. The company already boasts access to over 1,550 lounges in more than 500 airports worldwide.

  • Elevated Dining and Hotel Programs: American Express affirmed its continued investment in its curated dining and hotel programs. The recent acquisition of Tock is poised to significantly bolster the Resy platform, adding an additional 7,000 restaurants, wineries, and venues. This integration aims to provide Card Members with even more exclusive access to reservations. Furthermore, the Fine Hotels + Resorts® and The Hotel Collection programs will see hundreds of new properties added in popular destinations, with Fine Hotels + Resorts notably offering guaranteed 4:00 p.m. late check-out at over 1,600 locations globally – a unique perk among credit card issuer programs.

  • Business Platinum Card® Upgrades: The Business Platinum Card is also set to receive substantial enhancements, designed to provide Card Members with more robust benefits to support their businesses. While specifics were limited, the company highlighted the existing flexible spending limit, rich rewards on business expenses, virtual card capabilities, and access to cashflow management tools as foundational benefits that will be built upon. Business Platinum Card Members will continue to enjoy access to the refreshed dining, lounge, and hotel benefits.

  • New Brand Partnerships: American Express teased upcoming collaborations with leading brands as part of the Platinum Card refresh. Further announcements regarding these partnerships are expected in the fall, suggesting a broader expansion of value beyond traditional travel and dining perks.

The announcement has already sparked considerable speculation among card enthusiasts and industry analysts regarding potential changes to annual fees and the introduction of new statement credits.
