TWO HARBORS, Minn. – A single-vehicle crash on Highway 61 earlier this spring sent an elderly man to the hospital and served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on the scenic North Shore highway.

The incident occurred on Saturday, April 12, 2025, when a 2025 Ford Edge, driven by 85-year-old Ronald James Studier of Two Harbors, left the northbound lanes of the highway. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the vehicle entered the median and traveled for approximately 100 yards before coming to a rest.

Emergency crews from the Two Harbors Police Department and Lake County Ambulance and Fire responded to the scene. Mr. Studier was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The extent of his injuries was not immediately disclosed.

The crash prompted a temporary closure of a portion of Highway 61 as officials worked to clear the scene and investigate the cause of the accident. Traffic was rerouted, causing minor delays for travelers in the area.

While this particular incident did not result in a long-term closure, it highlights the ongoing efforts by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to improve safety along the historic roadway. MnDOT has several construction projects planned for the Highway 61 corridor in the coming years, including a significant project scheduled for 2027-2028. A public meeting was held on June 4, 2025, to update residents on these future plans.

Motorists are reminded that a full closure of Scenic Highway 61 is planned for Saturday, June 21, 2025, for the annual Grandma’s Marathon. Travelers should expect significant detours and are advised to plan accordingly.
