Multi-Vehicle Pile-Up Shuts Down Interstate 80 Near Kearney

KEARNEY, Neb. – A major multi-vehicle collision involving at least three semi-trailer trucks has forced the complete closure of a significant stretch of Interstate 80 between Elm Creek and Kearney, causing extensive traffic delays and prompting a large-scale emergency response.

The crash, which occurred in the westbound lanes, has resulted in at least one confirmed injury, according to early reports from the Nebraska State Patrol. The full extent of injuries and the number of people involved are still being assessed as emergency crews work at the scene.

The pile-up has left a snarl of twisted metal and debris scattered across the interstate, making the roadway impassable. Authorities have established a detour, rerouting westbound traffic off I-80 at the Kearney exit onto U.S. Highway 30 to bypass the crash site and reconnect with the interstate at Elm Creek. “We are dealing with a very serious situation here,” said a spokesperson for the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office. “Our primary focus right now is on the safety of the individuals involved and clearing the wreckage as quickly and safely as possible.”

Emergency personnel from the Kearney and Elm Creek fire departments, along with Nebraska State Patrol troopers and Buffalo County Sheriff’s deputies, are all on scene. Ambulances have been dispatched to transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.
