LOS ANGELES – A grim morning unfolded on the 405 Freeway Monday as a multi-vehicle crash in the Sepulveda Pass claimed the lives of a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant and a civilian, leaving the city’s major artery closed for hours and commuters snarled in miles-long gridlock.
The tragic chain of events began around 2 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the freeway near the Getty Center Drive and Sunset Boulevard exits in Brentwood. According to initial reports from the California Highway Patrol, the LAPD sergeant had stopped to render aid at the scene of a prior collision.
It was during this act of assistance that another vehicle plowed into the scene, striking the sergeant’s patrol car. The impact was catastrophic.

Northbound lanes were also temporarily closed to allow for emergency vehicle access but have since reopened.
Images from the scene showed a mangled silver pickup truck and other severely damaged vehicles, a testament to the violence of the impact. The LAPD patrol car sustained significant damage.
