Erie, Kan. – The small community of Erie is in mourning after a tragic train accident claimed the lives of two local youths on Wednesday afternoon. The Neosho County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the victims: 16-year-old Arthur Pollreis of Walnut and 12-year-old Kollin Showalter of Erie.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:39 p.m. on a Union Pacific Railroad bridge over the Neosho River, located south of Erie near 115th Road. According to authorities, the two boys were on the bridge when a southbound train approached. Tragically, they were unable to get to safety in time.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene immediately following a report from the train’s crew. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of Arthur Pollreis. A search was immediately launched for Kollin Showalter, who was believed to have fallen into the swollen Neosho River.
The search and rescue operation involved multiple agencies, including the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol, and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Drones, a helicopter, and search dogs were deployed in the effort. However, due to the fast-moving current and hazardous debris in the river, the active search for Kollin was suspended as daylight faded on Wednesday. Officials have stated that the effort will resume as a recovery mission.
“This is a devastating tragedy for our community,” said Neosho County Sheriff Greg Taylor. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these two young men.”
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Union Pacific is cooperating fully with local authorities. Counselors have been made available to students and staff at the local schools attended by the two boys.
